Bob Vaughan Trophy at Crake Valley Croquet Club

Saturday 22 June saw 14 players contest a short croquet, handicap singles event at the Crake Valley club, in Greenodd.

Crake, with its four lawns, is an ideal venue for an event of this kind, but it was at one point far from certain that the event would take place at all, the weather forecast in the week before ranging from gloomy to apocalyptic. However, an email from a previous winner, on the Thursday evening, to say he was setting off from Aberdeen to take part, tipped the scales in favour of not cancelling or postponing.
As it turned out, fortune favoured the brave. After an early shower, the day was dry and, eventually, sunny.

The event was won by Ian Hall, from Keswick croquet club, who played bold and enterprising croquet all day. He beat John Henderson, from the Penrith club, in what started as a very one-sided final, but turned into a keen and fairly even contest.

Players from the Crake club itself could get no further than the semi-final.
