Alternate Strokes Doubles a Success

(June 02, 2013)

Alternate Stroke Doubles competition.

On Sunday 2 June a dozen members gathered at the club to contest an Alternate Stroke Doubles competition. We decided to run this as a one-day event, in a new and untested format which, rather surprisingly, seemed to work quite well. The aim was to discourage Aunt Emma croquet, and encourage break play, and to some extent we succeeded. We seemed to spend our time mostly in the middle of the lawns, trying to make hoops, and not fossicking round the boundaries, and a couple of games even achieved a result within the hour and a half allowed.

People brought their own lunch; they got three one and a half hour, 14 point games, and the weather was good. No rain, and even moments when the wind dropped and the sun came out. The scoring system was intended to favour 24-handicap players, and victory did indeed go to a beginner, Sheila Edmondson. No doubt the format can be improved in a number of ways, but we felt this was a promising start, and will hope to repeat the event next year.
